Larry Michael (Mike) Allen is a native son of Georgia. He was killed in Vietnam in June of 1970. He is the brother of Tommy Allen, a classmate, faternity brother, and next door neighbor. I knew Mike during the years we were growing up in Decatur, Georgia, and attending Druid Hills High School.

Mike was the little brother always trying to be like his big brother and do the things with all the older boys. He was a nice kid, quiet, somewhat shy and full of life.

I was at his funeral at Rehobeth Church, while on leave from my unit in the Army. As it turned out I would be in Vietman within four months after is funeral. His funeral was the first close encounter with the death of a friend, but not the last.

He is what America is made of: good, decent, men and women who love their country enough to answer the call to duty. The world would have been a better place if Mike had lived to become an adult, and then an old man.

Mike is on the Vietnam Wall at Panel 09, Line 62. He was 18 when he was taken away. He will be forever young in our hearts and minds. He now belongs to the ages.

From a friend and neighbor,
John R Young
