Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I shall fear no evil: for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

"The Oasis" was located at Thanh An, about 24 kilometers south-southwest of Pleiku. On 11 Nov 1969 it was occupied by Headquarters, 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, and a variety of troop elements.

Shortly after midnight on the night of 10/11 May 1969 The Oasis was struck by a battalion of NVA troops. The attack was initiated against a part of the defensive perimeter manned by soldiers from the 366th Aviation Support Detachment, an air traffic control unit. SP5 Edward Barlow and SP4 Malcolm Bell were in a defensive bunker hit by a rocket-propelled grenade near the outset; Bell was killed and Barlow wounded by the round.

The after-action report indicates ten US soldiers were killed in the action, one (SSG Thomas Bumgarner) died three days later, and three were missing in action. The Virtual Wall can identify only nine of the eleven dead:

The three men missing had been captured; all survived and were repatriated on 27 March 1973:
  • SP4 Lenard E. Daugherty, 1/10th Cavalry
  • SP4 Thomas T. Horio, 1/10th Cavalry
  • SP4 Juan J. Jacquez, 1/10th Cavalry

SP5 Edward Barlow was survived by his wife, Karen L Barlow, daughter Tracy L (3 years), daughter Tina L (1 year), Florence Kentucky and his parents Mr and Mrs Buckley A Barlow. SP5 Barlow is buried in Hebron Cemetery, Hebron, Kentucky
