A Note from The Virtual Wall On the morning of 02 Nov 1967, Lance Corporal Bates' platoon from Mike Company, 3/7 Marines, was occupying a small defensive position when it was attacked by a company-sized force operating under cover of a heavy mortar barrage. Although the Marines ultimately held out, ten men were killed in action - some by gunfire, but most victims of satchel charges thrown into their fighting positions and bunkers: Sgt David H. Shoemaker, San Jose, CA (Silver Star) Cpl Willet R. Amendola, Deposit, NY (Navy Cross) LCpl Glen D. Bates, Hazlet, NJ LCpl Patrick J. Dearborn, Canada LCpl Davis A. Jones, Wellington, OH LCpl Gerald Kropidlowski, Stevens Point, WI LCpl Dana A. Pitts, Minneapolis, MN Pfc Robert E. Moore, Essex, MA Pfc James G. Edinger, Sodus, MI Pvt Stephano J. Fiducioso, Swedesboro, NJ Lance Corporal Bates is remembered on the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial site
