A Note from The Virtual Wall

The skies of South Vietnam were crowded, particularly near helicopter bases where numerous aircraft were operating at relatively low altitudes. On 27 June 1966, two UH-1 Hueys from different units lifted off from Tuy Hoa North airfield in Phu Yen Province. UH-1B 64-14047 took off on a northwest heading, while UH-1B 65-09486 took off on a westerly heading and then made a right turn to a northwest heading. The two aircraft collided, crashed, and burned, killing all eight men aboard:
  • Aboard UH-1B 65-09486, C/1/9th Cav:
    • MAJ Billy J. Nave, Johnson City, TN
    • CPT Richard T. Perrin, Omaha, NE
    • SP5 Louis E. Walton, Lansing, MI
    • SP4 Frank L. Gonderman, Concord, CA

  • Aboard UH-1B 64-14047, 161st AHC:
    • CPT Jerry W. McNabb, Gadsden, AL
    • CPT Donald R. Bryant, Springfield, OH
    • CPL Fredrick M. Binder, Kent, WA
    • PVT Jackie L. Goforth, St Louis, MO

The men from the 161st are memorialized on the
