Jack Bitting

The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial.
"Specialist four Bitting worked in a sweater-knitting mill on Frankford Avenue before enlisting in the Army in August 1966. He was stationed in Germany for a year before being assigned to Company C of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Viet Nam in March 1968. The 20-year-old grenadier and rifleman died less than a month later on April 25, 1968. He was survived by his parents, a brother and a sister."

I was with Jack in Germany as well as Viet-Nam. I was his squad leader in Germany. The world lost a lot of good men in Viet-Nam and Jack was one of the BEST. There were three of us from the 39th Infantry. Jack was killed in Nam and Billy McKinstry was killed by a drunk driver in up-state New York which just left me without two of my friends. But I never have forgotten them and I never will. Garry Owen.
