What first comes to mind when I remember Jim is that he was almost always smiling. I was laying next to him during the firefight in which he died and it wasn't but a few minutes earlier he and I had been joking about the rotten life of a grunt. He's more than just one of the too-many names on The Wall. For me, I'll always see his 20 year-old face grinning about some absurdity in the daily existence of a foot soldier. He died too young but he lives on in the memories of those who knew him.

John Akers, Jim Brady, Fred Kalar

I am so saddened to learn of Jim's ultimate sacrifice some 35 years after his death. I was Jim's Platoon Leader until May of 69 when I was reassigned only one month before Jim was killed. I have so many fond memories of his youthful smile and willingness to do whatever was asked. You could not ask for a better soldier than Jim. The bond was so strong in our platoon that knowing we lost you was losing family. I am so sorry and feel guilty that you have missed out on what the rest of us have enjoyed all these years.

Rest in Peace, Jim!

From his Platoon Leader,
