Robert and I were on patrol,
stopped for just a little while,
and finishing a game of 'Hearts',
when Robert Burciaga gave his life for me.

He took all the force from the blast of a Vietcong home made mine.
He was a "MARINE" in the true sense of the word.
I had not served with him for long.
Just like all the rest of us who were in Vietnam,
there for awhile and then gone,
some home, others just gone.
Robert was a pleasure to be around
and has been in my thoughts ever since.

To anyone who might have known Robert, relative or friend,
I would like to hear from you,
since I was the last Marine to see him alive.

I met Robert Burciaga in late June 1964 at MCRD San Diego. We were in the same training platoon (358). While in Receiving Barracks we got into a little tussell and he almost knocked me through a window. I learned that he had fought Golden Gloves boxing. He didn't hold a grudge and we got along after that. I was sorry to see his name on the wall.
