22 Nov 2004 The following obituaries are from the Wichita Eagle, late June 1967: Services were pending Tuesday for Pfc Darrell W. Butts, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold G. Butts, 336 N. Clifton, who died Sunday after being wounded Jun. 22 in Vietnam. Born in Lawrence, Kan., he came here in 1954. He attended Central Assembly of God Church. He entered the service after graduating from East High School in 1966. Survivors besides the parents include four brothers, Dennis, Bruce, Mike and Eric; three sisters, Nancy, Cindy and Phyllis all of the home; his grandparents Mrs. Caroline Butts Bowen, Wichita, and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Montgomery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a great-grandfather, I. C. Ferguson, Dysart, Iowa. Cochran Mortuary has charge. Services for Pvt. 1 C, Darrell Wayne Butts, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Butts, 336 N. Clifton, killed June 22 in Vietnam, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cochran Mortuary. Military rites will be in Lakeview Gardens Cemetery. Born at Lawrence, Kan., he came here in 1953. He joined the Army in September 1966 and was a 1966 graduate of East High School. Survivors, besides his parents, include four brothers, Dennis Bruce, Mike and Eric and three sisters, Nancy, Cindy and Phyllis, all at home: grandparents Mrs. Caroline Bowen, Wichita, and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Montegomery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a great-grandfather, I. A Note from The Virtual Wall On 22/23 June 1967 three platoons of A Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, were effectively wiped out in a meeting engagement with a battalion of North Vietnamese Army regulars. Seventy-four men from A Company died, 43 of them previously wounded men who were executed by close-range gunshots to the head during the night of 22/23 June. PFC Darrell Butts was one of the men who died in the fighting which became known as the Battle of the Slopes
