PFC John Bailey was killed while on a combat operation when his unit encountered a hostile force. He was the only member of his unit killed on that day's skirmish.

He is buried with is parents, John S Bailey, Sr (1972) and Ollie Mae Bailey (1992), in Hiseville Cemetery, Hiseville, Kentucky.
