I love all of you who we lost and those of you who are still missing. I have a spot for you all in my heart. Thank you so much for what you have done to protect my freedom and the freedom of others.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On the night of 20 March 1966, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 163 (HMM-163) was tasked with a night medevac mission from Phu Bai to Danang. A single aircraft, UH-34D BuNo 149351, was launched with four men aboard. After making the pick-up, the pilot elected to return to Danang via an over-water route due to heavy weather and low ceilings. The aircraft didn't make it but instead disappeared entirely. About a month later, a fisherman snagged his net on BuNo 149531's wreckage offshore just north of the mountains surrounding Danang. While the remains of three crewmen and the medevac passenger were recovered, Captain Arthur J. Beach's body was not found. The five men lost were
  • Capt Dennis D. Ferguson, Boone, IA, pilot, HMM-163
  • Capt Arthur J. Beach, Orange Cove, CA, copilot, HMM-163
  • LCpl Marvin F. Goodman, Orlando, FL, gunner, HMM-163
  • LCpl Gerald B. Schmidt, Albers, IL, crew chief, HMM-163
  • LCpl Lossy R. Wangler, Alameda, CA, passenger, A/1/4 Marines
