Master Gunnery Sergeant Berg started his tour on 16 May 1968 by October, was assigned to the Dong Ha Combat Base when it came under a 130mm Rocket attack. He was killed from fragmention wounds to the head and body from an incoming rocket explosion. The three Marines killed as a result of the rocket attack were:

MGySgt Berg was survived by his wife, Margaret L., son Michael A., daughters Melody S., and Kelley W Berg, all of Rosanne Drive, Kinston, North Carolina. He was also suvived by his mother Gertrude K. and father John F. Berg, Carner Boulevard, Marinette Wisconsin. His record of emergency data did not mention any siblings, which is not unusual. He is buried in Pinelawn Memorial Park, Kinston, NC.
