Robert Erva Berry was born on September 22, 1947. I do not know much about this man, nor had I even known his name until half an hour ago. I was assigned a report to find a Vietnam veteran that someone in my family knew. I went to my uncle and he gave me the name Bobby Berry, he had known him and described him as a nice tough kid. He had joined the Marines because of a fight he had with his girlfriend. He died on October 12, 1966. He was only 19 years old. I don't know what shocked me so much upon hearing this, but no matter what kind of a man this person he deserves to be remembered.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

In October 1966 the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines were at Con Thien (aka Hill 158), just south of the Demilitarized Zone, and were responsible for patrolling the area around the fire base. On 12 Oct two company-size patrols were sent out for a reconnaissance in force to the south and southwest of Con Thien, planning to meet a tank platoon moving north from Cam Lo. It was hoped that the three-pronged sweep could converge on any North Vietnamese troop concentrations found in the area.

As it turned out, all three prongs made contact with NVA, but separately:

  • 11:00 am - Golf 2/5 engaged an NVA platoon southwest of Con Thien
  • 11:30 am - The tank platoon engaged an NVA ambush force on the Cam Lo-Con Thien road; 3 tanks were hit and damaged by rocket-propelled grenades
  • 11:45 am - South of Con Thien Hotel 2/5 brushed aside an NVA squad while moving to assist the tankers
In each engagement the Marines lost one man killed and others wounded, while the NVA losses were hard to determine. Neither Hotel 2/5 nor the tankers searched the areas of their respective engagements. Golf 2/5 did do so, finding 4 NVA bodies and evidence that 14 others were killed. The three Marines killed in the engagements were
  • 1stLt Donald W. Rohleder, Baltimore, MD, A Co, 3rd Tank Bn
  • LCpl Regis P. Debold, Pittsburgh, PA, Golf 2/5
  • LCpl Robert E. Berry, New Milford, CT, Hotel 2/5
