A Note from The Virtual Wall The 544th Signal Detachment was a troposcatter radio unit located at the Khe Sanh Combat Base to provide long-haul communications for the base. In January Khe Sanh came under heavy attacks by NVA forces coming across the nearby Laotian border, and by February in effect was cut off and under siege. Mortar, rocket, and artillery bombardments were daily events and caused considerable harm to the units at Khe Sanh. On 02 Feb 1968 the 544th Signal Det lost four men to the bombardment: 1LT Rodney A. Alfano, Malden, MA; SP5 Albert L. Betts, Baltimore, MD; SP4 Leon F. Huber, St Augustine, FL; and SP4 Steven L. Raney, Swan, IA.
