The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial. After leaving Overbrook High School, Brown completed an aviation mechanics course and worked as a mechanic's helper. He enlisted in the Army in January 1967, and in June was sent to Viet Nam and assigned to Company B of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. The 19-year-old private first class, a rifleman, died on July 18, 1967, during a search and destroy mission in thick jungle northeast of Bien Hoa in Bien Hoa Province. Although wounded himself, he pulled three wounded comrades to safety and then charged a Viet Cong bunker before being mortally wounded. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Said his mother: "He wanted to serve his country and come home." Survivors included his parents.
