Floyd Eugene Close is my Uncle, but unfortunately I never had a chance to meet him. He was only 20 years old at the time of his death. I have heard stories about him my whole life and he has always been a huge part of my life through everyones' memories. I wish I had been given the opportunity to have my own memories with him. He is definitely a hero to his family and those who love him. Rest in peace and know that you are still very loved. |
A Note from The Virtual WallIn early September 1967 the 5th Marines headed into battle against North Vietnamese Army forces in Quang Nam and the nearby Que Son Valley. As the 3/5 Marines headed into the valley and a ten-day battle, Bravo and Delta 1/5 fought a three-day battle of their own on 4, 5, and 6 September.On 04 Sep 1967 Delta 1/5 was heavily engaged, with 23 dead and many more wounded - but they kept the field of battle. Reinforced by Bravo 1/5, the Marines continued until the NVA withdrew late on the 6th - but the price paid included a known total of 56 dead Marines and even more wounded. Private Floyd Close was one of the men killed in the initial fighting on 4 Sep 1967. |
