Greg was a friend and neighbor. He is the only person on the Wall who I knew. He was a dedicated Marine who was killed shortly after volunteering for a second tour. Several of us saw the Marine Corps car pull up and instantly knew what had happened. I will not forget his mother's scream as she opened the door.

Lance Corporal Coin was a good man. I was with him in Nam when he was promoted to L/Corporal I was their with him and Corporal Thompson at the time of the tragic incident which clamed their lives. I will always have these brave men in my memory and my heart.

A Note from The Virtual WallThe 7th Marines lost three men in two separate incidents on 10 June 1967. The 7th Marines Intelligence Summary (INTSUM NR 161) covering the period 100800H to 110800 June 1967 identifies both incidents in the entries below (they have been "translated" for readability).The first killed two men from HQ Company: "1410H, 10 June: HQ Company squad working party improving the perimeter defensive wire tripped an antipersonnel mine of unknown type resulting in one Marine killed, one Marine who died of wounds, and two Marines wounded but not requiring evacuation."The two men were Cpl Lawrence C. Thompson of New York City and LCpl Gregory C. Coin. The second incident involved Golf Company: "1905H, 10 June: Golf Company squad at grid coordinates AT894836 returning from patrol. Marine dropped an unidentified grenade which had been found earlier. Grenade detonated resulting in one Marine killed and 4 Marines wounded (3 evacuated)."The Marine killed in the accident was LCpl Milton H. Thomas of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lance Corporal Coin joined the 7th Marines after recovering from wounds received while serving with Lima Company, 3rd Bn, 5th Marines. On 22 July 1966 the 3/5 Marines were engaged in Operation HASTINGS near Cam Lo, Quang Tri Province, and were opposed by a regiment from the 324B NVA Division. 3/5 lost 15 men in three separate actions; Lima Company had three dead and a number of wounded from an egagement which began with an ambush patrol taking on several NVA and escalating from there. LCpl Coin was evacuated to the Army Hospital at Camp Kue, Okinawa, on 27 July. |
