Donald Ray Cooper, the only son of Austin Cooper and Doris Wells, was born April 19, 1944 in Gilroy, California. He had a younger sister, Debra. Donald was about 9 years old when his family moved to Sacramento. He attended Encina High School for only his senior year, graduating in 1963. He had attended American River College for two years when he was drafted into the US Army. At the time, he was divorced and the father of a 2-year-old son. Donald was deployed to Vietnam in March 1969 and served as a Corporal with the 25th Infantry Division. In less than a month, on April 8, 1969 in Hua Nghia, Donald was killed by a booby trap while on combat patrol. He was 24 years old. Burial was at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Sacramento.
