I was only 9 years old when my Uncle Greg was killed in action in South Vietnam. He was 20 years old, so he was only 11 years older than I was. I remember how fun it was to be around Uncle Greg, and how he loved all of his nieces and nephews and loved to play with them in the yard when we went to Grandma and Grandad's house. I remember he loved to come and play cards with my mom (his sister) and my dad. He used to go camping with us sometimes, too. I remember once that my dad sent Uncle Greg out to the camper to get some playing cards. And my dad ran around the back side of the house to beat him there, hiding in the camper, and jumped out to scare Uncle Greg when he opened the door! Fun times. He was engaged to marry Susan, and she had come to live with us for a while before my uncle passed away. We kept in touch with her, and I spent the summer with her in Alaska, after I graduated from high school. We talked about how God took a bad situation and used it for good, because it was through my Uncle's death that the rest of us in the family came to know the Lord. We all miss Uncle Greg, and it's good to know we we will see him again when we are all with the Lord. |
