02 Dec 2006 We called him "Terry". I did not know his real name until I found him on The Wall. I last talked to Carlin Martin Campbell Jr. and Michael J. Waterman on the runway at Dak To on June 21, 1967. They were waiting for the chopper and said they were going on a recon mission on the mountain. On June 22, 1967 they fought the NVA until the last of their ammo. Carlin Martin Campbell Jr. was one of 74 in A Co 2/503, 73 Abn Bde to lose his life that day in the Battle of the Slopes. A Note from The Virtual Wall On 22/23 June 1967 three platoons of A Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, were effectively wiped out in a meeting engagement with a battalion of North Vietnamese Army regulars. Seventy-four men from A Company died, 43 of them previously wounded men who were executed by close-range gunshots to the head during the night of 22/23 June. PFC Carlin Campbell was one of the men who died in the fighting which became known as the Battle of the Slopes
