He was a VERY brave Medic who was out in the field for nearly the entire 2+ months he was there.

This young man inspired and gave meaning to all of us. The debt we owe him, the debt I owe him embraces a lifetime. A debt is an obligation owed. I cannot repay this debt, the families cannot repay this debt, the community cannot repay this debt. We have a nation today because of the gifts from this young man.

Ronald Casper, a stout and brave boy of 10 years - plowing his dad's leased Irvine land, planting and harvesting the best bean crop ever grown at MacArthur Boulevard and South Main Street. All the while his sweet mom, Evelyn, was slipping away because of cancer - a finer, steadfast and more devoted dad, Jerome, there is not!

No one can bear the loss of the 10-year old who never knew childhood - being a man all his life!

When one's voice is raised and together we sing "How Great Thou Art!" It is plain to see the way to repay our debts and gian the strength to bear much more than one can bear.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 1st Bn, 27th Infantry lost two men on 03 March 1968: SGT Samuel D. Rider of Marlinton, WV, assigned to A Company, and PFC Ronald J. Casper, a medic with HQ Company. Both men are coded for Gia Dinh Province, where Saigon is located.

The 25th Infantry Division's after-action report for Operation SARATOGA advises that B, C, and D Companies, 2/27 Infantry were conducting operations west of Saigon with no casualties reported for 03 March. It does not address A Company, and The Virtual Wall cannot determine what that company was doing in Gia Dinh.
