A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 3rd Amphibious Tractor Battalion's Situation Report (SITREP #071) for 05 May 1968 contains the following description of an attack on its command post area:
"At 050130H [1:30 AM, 5 May] at coord 078706 3d Amtrac Bn CP attacked and penetrated by estimated platoon size sapper unit. Two bunkers destroyed by RPG rounds and grenades. Bunkers were overrun during breach of wire. Sappers continued into LVT tractor park and destroyed 3 LTVs and damaged 5 others. B-40s, satchel charges and 82mm mortars caused damage. Four buildings destroyed. Estimated CP received (80) 82mm and 50 rounds RPG. Assumed 100% alert posture. Reaction forces swept CP area and killed 6 VC. Two USMC KIA, 21 USMC WIA (15 evacuated)."
H&S Company, 3rd Amtrac Bn, lost two men in the incident: Cpl Ronald W. Child of St Louis, Missouri, and LCpl Thomas B. Gartland of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
