A Note from The Virtual Wall Seven men of B Company, 4th Bn, 12th Infantry, died when they were ambushed while crossing an irrigation canal on rafts while on patrol. The concealed enemy opened fire while the U.S. soldiers were in mid-canal, killing two by gunshot and one with a fragmentation weapon. Four men drowned, pulled under by the weight of their gear. The seven men were Cpl Fred Beile, St Louis MO Sp4 Harry F Conrad, Hackettstown NJ Sp4 Thomas E Garside, Flint MI Sp4 Burlon T Honeycutt, Clayton NC Sp4 Orville N Jones, Newfane NY PFC Merlin E Ball, Garden City KS PFC James R Cronin, Tucson AZ Sp4 Harry Conrad was the platoon commander's radio-telephone operator; he carried a 20-pound backpack radio in addition to his other gear.
