This memorial is not only for Robert but for his son Richard Lee Coonrod, and grandson Robert Lee Coonrod II. Richard was just a baby when his father died so not too many memories, and unfortunately all Robert's medals were thrown away by a jealous step-father. If there is anyone who knew Robert and has some photos or just great stories and/or memories, we would love to get in touch with you.

A memorial from his sister,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 28 Aug 1968 C Troop, 1st Sqdn, 1st Cavalry, lost two men to an "explosive device". CPL Charles D. Champion of Irving, Texas, was killed outright, while PFC Robert L. Coonrod died of injuries. It isn't certain that both men were involved in the same incident, or even that PFC Coonrod was wounded on 28 August ... but it seems possible, perhaps likely.
