Dana was my co-pilot in B-52s at McCoy AFB, Forida, prior to being assigned to choppers. We served three tours together in Southeast Asia, and Dana was 2 days short of the 500 TDY days required to avoid a tour in Vietnam. His wife, Terry, was left a widow with 3 children. Dana was a great guy and is sorely missed.

From Dana's navigator in B-52s,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 14 March 1970, a UH-1P (tail number 64-15491) was flying in support of a Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol mission in the Duc Lap area. The crew consisted of
  • Capt Dana A. Dilley, pilot;
  • Capt Marvin R. Loper, copilot;
  • SSgt John A. Thorburn, gunner; and
  • A1c David A. Carpenter, gunner.
The aircraft was brought down in jungle by enemy ground fire and was destroyed. Captain Dilley died in the crash, Captain Loper sustained broken bones in one foot and cuts, and both gunners sustained major injuries. An Army helicopter on the same operation landed near the crash site, retrieved the crew, and transported them to Cam Ranh Bay. After treatment they were evacuated to the U.S.
