12 May 2001 Today is May 12th, 2001. Memorial day is near. I attend an American Legion service at the cemetery at the corner of my street every year, then later on we attend a parade. And we remember people like Bobby Dupell. Hi Bobby, I was drafted in 1970 along with Richie Less from St. Gregory's and St. Thomas More, your old schools. You went in the same time as my brother Danny. I can think of some good memories from the old neighborhood. Me and Richie get together once a year in the summer at an army reunion at an American Legion post in Philly. We talk about old times, and the time spent at boot camp with the other guys at the reunion. The whole first floor of the barracks were all from Philly. And we give a toast to you, sometimes one too many, and a salute of respect and sadness. You are not forgotten. Jim Devine jd106th@aol.com

20 Oct 2001 Sergeant Bob Dupell is remembered by his comrades: "I served with Bob Dupell. We were in the same squad (track) together '69/'70. I remember him as a great guy and a pleasure to serve with. We lost him on an AP one night and I can remember that the whole platoon was broken-up when the CO told us of his fate that morning. Their wasn't a dry eye in the bunch. Our medic tried everything possible under heavy fire to save him. The dust-off was rapid but he just didn't make it. 31 March 2006 The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. "Bobby" Dupell left for Viet Nam as a compassionate and caring boy and died there a compassionate and caring man, his father said. Beneath his quiet reserve was a deep concern for his family and friends. The 1967 graduate of St. Thomas More High School had worked several months as a printer's apprentice before he was drafted into the Army in March 1969 and sent to Viet Nam. The 20-year-old sergeant, a rifleman with Company C of the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, died on February 6, 1970. A Note from The Virtual Wall The 1/5 Infantry History for 1970 tells us that "On February 06, 1970, at 0017 hours, an ambush patrol from Company C engaged an enemy force 2 kilometers southwest of the previous night’s contact. The unknown size enemy force returned the ambush’s fire with small arms and automatic weapons fire. Artillery and helicopter gunship fire was called in to help suppress the enemy fire. During the contact, two Bobcats from Company C were killed and two were wounded." The two men who died were SGT Robert J. Dupell and CPL Erick O. Olson of Tucson, Arizona.
