I am a 56 year old mother and grandmother. I am a schoolteacher ready to retire. I am a history teacher, and when Mark and I were in college in Morehead, KY, we had several history classes together. You know, when I think back to 1967, I picture Mark sitting across from me and us talking. My husband of 34 years,Tom, and Mark were in the same club so they knew each other too. Back then, I tended to miss class a lot if I thought I could run into Tom. I ended up almost failing the class. Tom sought out Mark and got notes and a book and they snuck them in the dorm one night. I always thought that if it hadn't been for Mark, I would not have passed, and Tom would have given up on me.

I have a rubbing of Mark's name that I got years ago. As I teach my American History class every year, I am always touched deeply by the deaths of so many young men. I thought "Mark should be teaching school ... not gone to war". Thinking of him always brings a smile to my face ... and tears to my eyes.

I want to thank all the great people who knew my dad and have taken the time to put up a memorial in his honor. I only wish that I could have met him. I was not born until July and he was killed in April. That is a great misfortune. I salute you, Mark. You were a great man. Thanks...... I Love You, Laura Ann

While growing up in Evarts I was a paper boy and deliverd the Knoxville News Sentinel to the Davis home. When I was baptised in 1970 I was presented a New Testament by my church, the Evarts Congregational Church. The New Testament had the following inscription inside the front cover: "This New Testament presented in memory of Mark Davis who always dreamed of being a school teacher." I still have the New Testament and think of Mark and his mother when I look at it.
