Bill Ellis and I were friends. He was a door gunner in the second flight platoon, I was a crew chief in the first flight platoon, but I came to know him as a friend. He was the only guy I knew that had a lamp by his cot, it was not an ordinary lamp but had dingle balls on the shade. Why, after thirty five years, would I remember that! He was an unassuming, gentle man. He did his job, he gave the last full measure of devotion. He gave for you and me. We all knew that we could be killed at any time, we did our jobs, Bill did his. He could just as easily be writing this memorial for me. Thanks, Bill, for my two kids and the last 35 years. I love you, man. Kent (Sharecropper) Dotson |
A Note from The Virtual WallOn 23 August 1969 a UH-1H (tail number 67-17644) from A Company, 158th AHB, went down in Thua Thien Province in northern South Vietnam. Very little is known about the incident, other than only one man died in the crash - SP4 William W. Ellis.
