A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 16 Sep 1969 a CH-47C (tail number 68-15841) from the 180th Assault Support Helicopter Company was moving a sling load consisting of a 105mm howitzer and a pallet of ammunition from LZ Two Bits to the forward fire base where the gun was to be emplaced. After leaving LZ Two Bits the aircraft flew along the Song Lai Giany river valley into worsening weather, then turned northeast to follow a draw in the hills leading to the fire base.

On the ground, the fire base commander could hear the aircraft approaching and advised by radio that the fire base was surrounded by fog and low clouds. He then saw the aircraft pass overhead and begin a descending right turn, at which time it disappeared in the fog and clouds. Shortly thereafter the fire base commander heard the aircraft crash. A gunship from the 61st AHC was on-scene within minutes and was able to locate the burning wreckage by hovering up-slope under a 50-foot ceiling. The Huey pilot saw no signs of survivors, and a patrol sent to the crash site confirmed that all aboard had been killed in the crash. The CH-47 crew consisted of

  • CWO Arthur C. Faircloth, Atlanta, GA, pilot;
  • CWO Thomas R. Poundstone, Clarion, IA, copilot;
  • SP5 Allen Cain, Miami, FL, flight engineer;
  • SGT Larry G. Moothart, Norwalk, CA, crew chief; and
  • SP4 James M. Floyd, League City, TX, gunner.
