20 Jan 2002 Lt. Gaines was my platoon commander. He was a good man in a bad place. I was wounded and a few yards away from him when he died. I was in the med-evac chopper with Lt. Gaines at the start of his journey back to the "world". He was respected by all the Marines of the 3rd Platoon and is greatly missed. He led us through a lot of hard times in Nam and is responsible for many of the living to come back to the "world". You will always be remembered and missed by those who served under you. 10 Aug 2005 Lt. Charles Gaines was and will always remain my best friend and he will always remain an inspiration to me. His love and kindness motivated me to want to be like him. I enlisted in the Marine Corps at the earliest possible age and my life was forever changed for the better. Of the many positive things that can be said of Charlie, perhaps none is more meaningful than "he cared." Not a day goes by without him passing through my memory. A Note from The Virtual Wall The 2nd Bn, 1st Marines Command Chronology for Nov 1966 contains the following entry for 20 Nov: "At 1415H, a Co F platoon conducting a combat patrol at BT040602 discovered a mined punji trap. During probe of the pit the mine detonated causing 3 USMC KIAs and 8 USMC WIAs of which 3 WIAs were not evacuated." The three men killed by the mine were 2ndLt Charles J. Gaines, Newton, MS; Sgt Harry J. Shepherd, Largo, FL; and Cpl William B. Dorsey, Yonkers, NY.
