My name is Valerie Cognevich.

I graduated with Eric from Behrman High School in 1967.
We dated briefly but remained friends.

Yesterday was the date of his death and I found myself
thinking about him.

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us;
what we have done for others and the world remains
and is immortal."
-- Albert Pike --

For Eric:

Eric laughed more in his short 21 years than many men laugh in a lifetime. He left memories in all who knew him, little knowing that those times would end so abruptly. It was a cruel war to take men with so much to live for and who left behind so many to mourn. Eric's funeral 35 years ago was such a bittersweet experience because it brought together friends, yet they brought heartache and grief that would never leave. I'm 54 now and realize that Eric is still barely out of his teens, with curly black hair and a young man's sense of wonder and humor. Yet, it seems such a short time ago that we shared some wonderful times together. If it's true that a man lives on through the memories of friends, then Eric is as real today as he was the day he left for the last time. He had a lot of friends then, and he still has many friends who keep his soul alive.

Love, Valerie
