21 Jan 2005 Operation Lamar Plain was launched on 15 May 1969 when the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) sent a brigade task force south to Quang Tin Province in order to reinforce the Americal Division. Combat medic Paul Ga Nun was with the First Platoon of Charlie Company. On 18 May 1969, the First and Second Platoons assaulted a small but fortified hill north of LZ Professional. Two men, John Vollmerhausen and Rudy Rossi, had been shot by the enemy during the assault and Ga Nun ran to their aid. Doc Nun, as the soldiers referred to him, had just reached Vollmerhausen when he was wounded by small arms fire. Two men, one of them a medic, began working on Ga Nun but they could not save him.
