Charles Hawkins lived on East York Street in the Kennsington area of Philadelphia not far from the banks of the Delaware River. According to an article in the Philadelphia Daily News Charlie left school in the ninth grade to find work but a short time later had to stay home to care for his invalid mother. Following her death Charlie tried to enlist but was turned down presumably because he was only seventeen years old. He was turned down a second time perhaps due to his slight physical frame and a severe speech impediment. Charlie finally entered the army in October 1968. He arrived in Vietnam in April 1969. Charles Hawkins did not die in an A Shau Valley campaign in Thua Thien Province as reported in the newspaper article. He died during Operation Lamar Plain in Quang Tin Province. |
