Tommy Heaton was the son of Cohen and Louvelia Heaton. A graduate of Stephens County High School, Tommy was drafted into service. Following training as a combat infantryman, Tommy was assigned to the 11 Light Infantry Brigade, a component of the Americal (23rd Infantry) Division.

On 17 April 1969 his unit was involved in action in Quang Ngai Province, South Vietnam, where he received fatal gunshot wounds. Tommy's valor on the field of battle was recognized by his posthumous promotion to Corporal.

Corporal Tommy C. Heaton was interred with full military honors in the New Hope Baptist Church cemetery on Friday, 2 May 1969. He is remembered and honored by his community and by his comrades in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Leon Williams Post 4346, Toccoa, Stephens County, Georgia.


 
Stephens County, Georgia, lost eight of its sons in Vietnam.
