Ismael attended Big Spring, Texas, schools, last attending Big Spring High School. He was drafted into the Army in January 1967. He was married. He was trained as an Armored Crewman. Three weeks before his 21st birthday on February 7, 1968, he was killed by an explosive device. He was buried with full military honors in the Mount Olive Cemetery in Big Spring, Texas. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals posthumously. He is remembered by the Big Spring Vietnam Memorial and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Midland, Texas.

F Troop, 17th Cavalry, was the 196th Infantry Brigade's ground recon element. The Troop lost four men on 07 Feb 1968, during the early days of the Tet Offensive:
