I served with Wally at the time of his death. He was in the process of becoming the platoon sergeant and I looked forward to his leadership. He always had a smile and a positive outlook on life. I miss him.

Walter E Hutchinson

 

Five men were killed when they encountered a booby trap placed by the enemy. The 5 men killed in the incident were:

SP4 Billy Dean Weitzel survived the detonation and was medevaced. He was admitted to a medical facility but later expired.

Son of Valerie Angela (Nicki) Hutchinson (1918-2003) and James Shirley Hutchinson (1917-1978). He was survived by his parents, sisters Audrey Hutchinson of Toledo, OH, Nicki Townsend of Gaines, MI, Valerie Bassett of Topinabee, Mary Sereseroz of N. Zulch, TX; brothers James S Hutchinson (1944-2009), Herbert Hutchinson of Indian River, and Joseph Hutchinson, Thomas Hutchinson and Arthur Hutchinson, all of Durand, MI. He was preceded in death by his brother Duffy Peter Hutchinson (unknown-1958)

SGT Hutchinson, his parents, and brother Duffy are buried in Saint Monica Roman Catholic Cemetery, Afton, Cheboygan County, Michigan. Brother James S is buried in Burt Mullett Cemetery, Topinabee, Cheboygan County, Michigan.
