Joe was born in Alpine, Texas. He was the oldest of 11 children, born to Jesus and Estoria Llanez. As his family was large, he was raised by his grandmother in Pecos, Texas, while the remainder of the family lived in Odessa. He assumed his maternal last name before he started to school. He attended Pecos schools and Pecos High School. He dropped out and was working when was drafted in 1968. He began his tour in Vietnam with the 5th Cavalry Regiment, First Cavalry and was killed two months from the beginning of his tour. He was buried with full military honors in his home town of Pecos, Texas. He is remembered by his family, his hometown and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Midland, Texas.
