Gary and I became very close friends while training with Staging Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California in the summer of 1967.

He was quite an interesting young man. We called him preacher. He always had a cigar in his mouth and a bible in his hand. After we arrived in Da Nang we got separated. I went to Camp Carroll with the 2nd Bn, 9th Marines and I didn't know where Gary went. While in the hospital during the spring of 68, I picked up a copy of Leatherneck magazine and spotted a photo of Gary carrying an M-60 machine gun. He was in Hue and assigned to Hotel Co, 2nd Bn, 5th Marines. I wrote him a letter but never heard from him. A mutual friend told me that he died in Vietnam but I never found out what the circumstances were.

I think of Gary often and miss his humor and intellect very much. I'm not much of a cigar smoker, Gary, but save one for me. We shall meet again.
