26 Feb 2004

Gerald Kirby and I buddied up at the in-country new arrival training center for all Screaming Eagles, "SERTS" in Bien Hoa. We helped each other adjust to the new environment. What I remember most is that he had a great sense of humor. He joked around a lot ... and made me laugh. We were assigned to the same unit and took that terrifying first helicopter ride out to the bush together. We were assigned to different platoons, so from that time on we didn't get to see each other much.

The afternoon he was killed we were having lunch along a trail. A sniper made him his target. He survived only one month, we had hoped to do the twelve togeter. From that date on, I was never sure of my survival. I could only ask God to be with me, and do my best.

I regret that I do not have a photo of Kirby ... some day I hope to contact a family member of his to share what he meant to me. I will never forget him ... I live in his place.

Miss you, buddy.
