I served with Sergeant Kohlbeck for over a year and he was a wonderful person and friend. He was always there to help, and possesed a great musical talent. Me and the other guys from that band miss him.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Two men from the 1st Cavalry Division's HHC & Band died on 20 Feb 1966:
  • SFC Victor J. Kohlbeck, Manitowoc, WI, and
  • SP5 Thomas M. Dillard, Sheffield, AL.

The casualty records for both men indicate they died from gunshot wounds, but other sources - a family friend for SFC Kohlbeck and SP5 Dillard's Company Commander - attribute their deaths to injuries received during a mortar attack. By report, SFC Kohlbeck was helping to carry wounded to a medevac helicopter when he was fatally wounded by mortar fragments.
