John was a patriot American almost from his birth - which was on Flag Day in 1946.

As a 3-year old he was good so he could go to the side of the West Point Parade ground to (as he said!) watch them "shoot the Flag down".

He went to Auburn University on a Navy scholarship and when he graduated as an Aerospace Engineer he went Marine option. In the 1st Marine Division, after two months in Div HQ, he asked for Recon patrol duty in the field. He was killed by a grenade in Quang Province on May 24,1969.

John is buried in the Barancas National Cemetery aboard the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida.

From his father,
John W. Lakin
Colonel, USAF (Ret)
