27 Sep 2006 Bruce was my uncle, though I wasn't born for 6 more years after his death. His death still saddens my father, his brother. October is a tough month for my dad. Though I can't understand the pain of losing a sibling, I can sympathize with the anger one feels when you lose someone who was fighting for a noble cause, freedom, but then the loss is greatened when the American people criticized the war and returning vets. My brother and I recently attended a Memorial held at our old high school, which is where Butch also went, years before us. The school held a memorial for veterans from Perry County. The Historian's Club built a monument and gave out medals of honor, along with a framed rubbing of our uncle's name from the Wall. It was a nice ceremony. And although they acknowledged that for some, it was too little, too late, it was still nice to see that someone cared, 30 years later. This opportunity got us thinking about people out there that may have known our uncle. Since our family is small, and those still surviving don't talk about Butch, it's hard for us to know our lost uncle. We've recently been contacted by two gentlemen who were near my uncle when he was killed, and it's nice to hear things about him. Not everyone has the luxury of hearing of their loved ones' last moments. Thank you to all of the vets who served in Viet Nam, and to those that never came back alive.
