Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 1/7 was supposed to land on 13 August 1965 but our mail address was "Marine 13" and the Colonel would not land a "Marine 13" on Friday the 13th so we went ashore on 14 August. Our designation was changed from BLT 1/7 to 1st Bn, 7th Marines, 4th Brigade, but we were then assigned to the 3rd Marine Division.

I served with Merrill stateside with Lima 3/1. He was one of the "old salts" and most of our company was made up of new Marines. When we were ready to go to Okinawa for our 13 month tour Merrill had transferred out as he had already done his overseas duty. We heard Merrill had been killed in Vietnam, and was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery. He was the kind of Marine the new Marines looked up to.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 7th Marines were an assigned unit of the 1st Marine Division, which didn't set up shop in Vietnam until early 1966. In the interim, 1st MarDiv elements deployed to Vietnam were placed under operational control of the 3rd Marine Division. When 1st MarDiv activated its headquarters in Vietnam the 7th Marines (and other 1st MarDiv elements) reverted to the 1st MarDiv.
