TSgt Leftwich was a Fort Scott, Kansas native. He was a veteran of WWII, having enlisted at age 17, served as a radioman and served in the Pacific, saw duty in B-25s and B-29s. He served in Germany during the Occupation and also served in several stateside bases. He was married to Betty Carolyn of San Angelo, Texas. He served at Goodfellow Air Force Base and considered San Angelo his home.

He began his tour in Vietnam on October 17, 1966 and was assigned as a senior radioman with Detachment I, 6994th Security Squadron. He was detached and was flying with the 361st Tactical Recon Squadron on March 9, 1967 as a senior radioman. The EC-47 was conducting a psyops [sic] operation. The aircraft was lost. The aircraft was subsequently located two days later and all crewman were dead. In the subsequent investigation it was determined that the aircraft was shot down.

TSgt Lefwich was buried with full military honors at the Arlington National Cemetery.

On June 29, 1984, a dormitory on Security Hill at Goodfellow Air Base in San Angelo was named in his honor.

He is remembered by the Concho Valley Vietnam Memorial in San Angelo, Texas as well as the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Midland, Texas.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 09 March 1967 RC-47P tail number 43-49201 was flying a radio direction finder mission when it was shot down about 10 miles south of Duc Pho. Seven men - four aircrew, three equipment operators - were killed in the crash:
