My brother, nicknamed Buzz, was the middle of three sons. He reluctantly went off to war in January 1969 at a time when many of his contemporaries went north to Canada. He did not believe in this war, but never the less felt obligated to his duty. During his 6 months in combat, he was awarded 4 Bronze Stars and 2 Army Commendation Medals for bravery. On his fateful search and destroy mission on 6/19 he was also awarded the Silver Star, the 2nd family member to receive that award. My Dad also received for his heroism in World War 2.

As the youngest son, Buzz was a great role model for me. We had planned to attend college together after his discharge. His death has left an empty space in our family's lives that will never be filled. My mother and father never recovered from his loss, and were shells of their former selves. Both have since passed on and have hopefully reunited with Buzz in afterlife.

Almost 40 years later, I still think of Buzz often and find it difficult to hold back a tear when talking of him to family or friends. I sometimes think how different our lives would have become if Buzz had driven the NY Thruway north to Toronto.

I would welcome any thoughts from those who may have served with Buzz during his tour Jan 3 to Jun 19, 1969. My email is zipchip@optonline.net.

From his brother,
Chip Little
