The Mission

CPT James Oliver Lynch was the copilot of a UH-1F (tail number 65-07937) flying an extraction mission for a recon team. After making the pickup, the aircraft received enemy fire, killing Lynch and seriously wounding the pilot and one gunner, Sergeant Isidro Arroyo. Although wounded, the pilot managed to land in a nearby clearing. The aircraft came to rest with its tail boom broken and its skids ripped out from under it. SGT Arroyo, although wounded in the back, helped move the dead and wounded pilots to a rescue slick (UH-1) while the other gunner sterilized the wreck. Unable to board the UH-1 because there was no room, Arroyo waited on the ground for another helicopter to pick him up. The wrecked Huey was destroyed in place.
