A good friend who has gone ahead of those of us who survived. You are still remembered by us and will never be forgotten. You are sadly missed and some day we will all meet again!

TO MY DADDY AND ALEC'S GRANDPA

I know from family how proud you were to be a Marine and how proud your family is of you today. I understand the sacrifice you made and someday your grandson will too. I just wish with all my heart you could have met me, born only 15 days before you passed on. I know you are around me, I've seen you in my dreams, even 32 years later I know you are here. Thank you for watching over me and Alec and of course Mom, who has never loved anyone as much as you. Your picture hangs in my home with honor and much love.

Your Loving Daughter and Grandson,
Christi Labowski-Cooper and Alec

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 25 March 1969, during Operation PURPLE MARTIN, Alpha 1/4 came under heavy fire from a well-camoflaged bunker complex occupied by belligerent NVA troops. The Marines returned fire and prepared to reduce the complex using a combination of supporting arms (air and artillery) and infantry assault. The fight lasted much of the afternoon, with five Marines killed in the fighting and a number of others wounded. The dead were
  • Sgt Leonard W. Labowski, San Francisco, CA
  • Sgt Dennis M. Orbino, Syracuse, NY (H&S Co with Alpha 1/4)
  • Pfc James E. Brannon, Milwaukee, WI
  • Pfc Jack D. Carter, Scottsdale, AZ
  • Pfc Avey Presley, Elizabeth, NJ
Sergeant Labowski received two posthumous awards of the Bronze Star for valor. The first award was for an action on 08 Feb 1969; the second was for his actions on 25 March 1969.
