Sgt Walter Marcum; Cpt Bernard Hodges

I took this picture in Kontum District Headquarters about a month before their deaths.

Captain Bernard Hodges is on the right; Sergeant Walter V. Marcum is on the left. Sergeant Marcum was a weapons advisor on Hodges' Mobile Advisor Team.

While I did not know SGT Marcum well since he was assigned to another MAT, his devotion to duty and long-term commitment to our cause in South Vietnam was obvious. It is my understanding that SGT Marcum had been in-country for almost three years on a MAT team - a particularly commendable dedication, considering the hardship and danger inherent in being in the field as an infantryman. SGT Marcum ultimately gave all for America; may he be an example for our countrymen.
