08 Sep 2003 I served with Bill. I was with Co M, 3rd Bn, 26th Marines. You were a well respected Navy Corpsman and a great mentor for the men junior to you. Thanks for your guidance by example. Only God knows how many men your skills helped to save during operations Taylor Common, Russell Beach and Defiant Measure in that first quarter of 1969. 11 Nov 2004 God bless you, Bill. We worked together in the same hospital at Portsmouth, Virginia, checked out together on our last day, and flew over to Vietnam together. I still have our orders with both of our names on it for reporting in when we got to Vietnam. I'll never forget the day when we were checking out of the hospital. You were so funny! I think you alienated just about everyone you talked to. You were so glad to be getting away from hospital duty that you were beside yourself. It was plain to see the confidence and self determination you had in yourself. When we arrived in Vietnam and were assigned to 3/26 we parted ways - you to Mike Company, me to Kilo. I only knew you briefly but you left a life-long impression on me. Your courage, conviction and honor were apparent to me before you even went into the bush. When I got word that you had lost your life I was deeply saddened, but it didn't surprise me - knowing what you were made of. You were the best of the best, Bill, and always will be. A Note from The Virtual Wall Although formally assigned to H&S Company, 3/26, Petty Officer McCormick was the senior Corpsman for M Company and spent the bulk of his time with Mike 3/26. "You guys are the Marine's doctors - There's none better in the business than a Navy Corpsman ..." -- Lieutenant General "Chesty" Puller -- Visit John Dennison's Medics on the Wall memorial which honors the Army Medics and Navy Corpsmen who died in Vietnam.
