"SCOTTY" was his nickname. He was sent to C Company, 23rd Med Battalion to train as an OJT medic to be sent out in the field with F Troop. I was OJT also but been in country 6 months before Scotty. He asked everyone about the bush and seemed so excited to go. His day came a couple weeks after arriving. The Troop was hit hard and Medics were usually in the line of fire. Scotty was looking at slides I had taken while in the the bush when word came he had to go. He was so excited he left guickly with a pack and his M16, only saying "See ya" while at a near run. Next day I heard F Troop was hit with land mines and Scotty never knew what hit him. He died from concussion. I was there to pay my friend tribute by unloading his body from the medevac chopper "236 Dust off" and help Graves Registration place his body in the cooler. I volunteered that day to go out but they wouldn't let me cause I had a generator MOS also and was in charge of the hospital's generators. I wanted to do what Scotty did that day but he saved my life. Thank you, John E. Mitchell, for being my friend and fellow soldier!
