Anastacio was raised in the valley of South Texas and in Presidio, Texas, across the border from Mexico in the "Big Bend Country" of West Texas. He was a 16 year veteran of the U.S. Army, served in Korea and Vietnam, and was qualified in Special Forces. He is missing in action from a firefight in which the survivors had to abandon him as he was assumed to be dead. His body has never been found. He is remembered by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veteran's Memorial located in Midland, Texas. May his sacrifice not be forgotten.

A Note from The Virtual WallAccording to various sources, Sergeant First Class Anastacio Montez was assigned to B Company, 5th Special Forces Group, and from there to the 2nd Mobile Strike Force Command at Detachment B-20, 5th SFG. The MSFC's battalions were made up of indigenous troops - Vietnamese, ethic Cambodians and Chinese, and mountain tribesmen - led by Allied officers and troops.On 24 May 1969 2nd MSFC elements were defending Hill 668, southeast of the Special Forces camp at Ben Het (Det A-244) in Kontum Province. During the fight SFC Montez was severely wounded and subsequently died of his wounds. It was not possible to recover SFC Montez's body when the MSFC troops were forced from the hilltop, and the enemy presence precluded a later effort to recover his remains. |
